National assessment data continue to show significant declines in student achievement in reading and mathematics. According to the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), reading scores continue to fall, while mathematics performance remains below pre-pandemic levels. These findings highlight the growing need for high-quality academic support that helps students strengthen foundational skills, close learning gaps, and prepare for future success. L.E.A.D. The Nation's Report Card – Reading Trends (2024)

The data show that:

  • Grade 4 reading scores fell 5 points since 2019 and 2 points since 2022.

  • Grade 8 reading scores also declined, with 33% of eighth graders performing below Basic, the highest percentage recorded. 

  • Fourth-grade math remains below pre-pandemic (2019) levels, despite a small improvement from 2022.

  • Eighth-grade math has not recovered, with overall performance still below 2019 levels.
